not the exact case, but my PS4 controller didn't work initially. What i did was starting the Big Picture mode first. Controller settings in Big Picture mode were set to Playstation Controller Support and "Forced (On)". Then i started the game and it worked. After that it also worked in normal Steam mode.

I would plug in your controller when you turn on big picture. Yes, I'm running it through the EA app. I only tried to use DS4W because it wasn't picking up the controller via Bluetooth. I haven't given wired a try yet, so I'll do that.
